Silk PLA is a high-gloss PLA 3D printer filament designed to create a smooth, silk-like surface. Its special formulation helps reduce the visual appearance of layer lines, giving printed models a bright, refined, and luxurious finish without painting or complicated post-processing.

It retains the easy-printing characteristics of PLA, including low warping, relatively low odor, and good dimensional stability. Silk PLA is ideal for vases, sculptures, decorations, trophies, character models, gifts, display pieces, and artistic projects where appearance is a priority.

Key Features

  • Smooth, silk-like, high-gloss surface
  • Reduces the visual appearance of layer lines
  • Reliable extrusion and stable printing
  • Low shrinkage and reduced warping
  • Good interlayer adhesion
  • Relatively low printing odor
  • No enclosed printing chamber required
  • Suitable for beginners and experienced makers
  • Available in single-color, dual-color, and multicolor effects

Physical Information

  • Material: Silk-Effect Polylactic Acid (Silk PLA)
  • Common filament diameter: 1.75 mm
  • Typical density: Approximately 1.20–1.25 g/cm³
  • Surface finish: Smooth, glossy, and silk-like
  • Key properties: Easy to print, low warping, and dimensionally stable
  • Moisture sensitivity: Moderately hygroscopic; store sealed after opening
  • Applications: Vases, sculptures, decorations, trophies, models, and artwork
  • Storage: Keep sealed in a moisture-resistant container with desiccant

Recommended Printing Parameters

  • Nozzle temperature: 200–225°C
  • Heated-bed temperature: 40–60°C
  • Printing speed: 30–60 mm/s
  • Outer-wall speed: 25–40 mm/s recommended
  • First-layer speed: 15–25 mm/s
  • Layer height: 0.15–0.28 mm
  • Nozzle diameter: 0.4 mm or larger
  • Cooling fan: 80%–100% after the second layer
  • Build surface: PEI, textured build plate, glass, or a glue-assisted surface
  • Drying recommendation: Dry at 40–50°C for approximately 4–6 hours

Tips for a Better Silk Finish

  • Maintain a stable printing temperature and speed
  • Reduce the outer-wall printing speed
  • Use a larger layer height and continuous outer walls
  • Increase wall thickness to enhance surface reflection
  • Minimize speed changes on visible surfaces
  • Position the seam on the back or a less-visible area
  • Print a temperature tower before final production

Silk PLA formulations generally prioritize surface gloss over mechanical performance. Parts intended for snap fits, structural loads, or repeated bending should be tested for the intended application.

The parameters above are general recommendations for Silk PLA. Actual settings should be adjusted according to the product formulation, printer model, and printing environment.
